CAKE BREAK: Wreath and Garland Wedding Cakes

The Christmas holiday is upon us, and we’re pretty sure when you hear the words “wreath” and “garland,” Christmas decorations spring to mind. But we aren’t talking about those fragrant signs of the season. We are talking about a stylish take on Wedding Cakes that has nothing to do with Santa and his reindeer, but has everything to do with a perfect desert on your wedding day cake table.

Boho brides, we know you love your floral crowns and greenery halos! We do too. But did you know that this free-spirited trend has made its way onto wedding cakes? Pastry chefs and wedding cake bakers everywhere have been turning out tons of artsy-chic garland and wreath cakes. They’ve basically taken style inspiration from what you want to wear in your hair and translated it into cake decorations. De La Rosa Cakes & Cupcakes is responsible for the sweet boho wedding cake crowned with a floral wreath below (image by Sonya Khegay):

These whimsical wedding cakes are adorned with wreaths, or garlands, or swags of something beautiful. These bakery delights can be topped with anything from handmade sugar confections to natural elements – and therefore they can lend themselves to any style wedding decor. For example, if you are planning a feminine-but-rustic nuptial, take a peak at this glorious customized cake by Baker’s Brew Studio, which features hydrangeas, greens and twigs. It is the absolute perfect combination of girly & foresty. Perched atop of wood slice, the swag of loveliness accentuates the delicateness of the pale pink ombre cake. We know, you want a matching crown to wear. We do too.

Are you going with mocha and peach tones for your wedding palette? Get inspired by this yummy milk chocolate and gold three-tiered cake from designer Susan Trianos which features a twig wreath, leaves, tiny beaded pods and one gorgeous rose.

Going for a preppy, Southern-style, Kate Spadesque wedding soiree? Then you’ll be wanting a crisp black and white striped cake with a boxwood wreath, like this one:

For all you DIYers who plan to decorate your own cake, we love this square boxwood wreath to add a dose of classic sophistication to your cake at your wedding, available at Target for $26.99, (and just right to hang on your new front door in the future), here:

Are you planning a Spring garden wedding with shades of pistachio & mint? We bet you’ll be majorly inspired by this fabulous option from Wedding Cakes by Design; a marbled, three-tiered confection adorned with a stunning wreath of Juliet roses, tea roses and trailing vines:

The perfect cake stand for your wreath or garland wedding confection? We suggest this gorgeous, modern marble & acacia wood cake stand, available at Target for $24.99 here:

Are you looking for a super-simple but elegant cake for your intimate wedding? Might we suggest this option, a white cake encircled with laurel. (Cool fact: Laurel crowns were worn as a mark of honor in the past):

One of the easiest ways to incorporate a greenery garland is to simply encircle the base of a cake. We love the clean, fresh look which would be a snap to recreate for yourself very affordably. Just purchase a white cake and wrap a garland around it. Use a fresh strand of greenery from your florist, or purchase an artificial one.

Is your wedding more of a floral garland cake type of affair? Then, try this adorable floral garland, for under $40, available here:

We are enchanted with the posh British cake design house Rosalind Miller‘s botanical collection, (image by Mowie Kay) seen below. Swags of sugar florals never looked more gorg!

However you envision your special day, there is the perfect garland or wreath cake for you. You’ll love it so much it will feel like Christmas!

Woodsy Weddings! Rustic Style Ceremonies are Still a Trend For 2018 #nomasonjarsneeded

When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy,

And the dimpling stream runs laughing by;

When the air does laugh with our merry wit,

And the green hill laughs with the noise of it.

~William Blake

Woodsy Weddings are super popular for 2018, with a bounty of natural elements such as armloads of greenery, shafts of sunlight, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the glorious woods setting the stage. The upcoming season’s take on the ever-popular rustic themed wedding is an updated, more nature-inspired affair. Think fresh-face brides, hand made signs, whole foods, and the gorgeous backdrop of mother nature.

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “A grove of giant redwood or sequoias should be kept just as we keep a great and beautiful cathedral.” And we think exchanging your vows in a forest grove is effortlessly romantic and an appropriate choice of settings. You can enhance the beauty of nature with just a few key pieces of decor such as a hanging crochet arbor, or an antique bike topped with a box overflowing with flowers. Flower petals can still pave the way down the aisle, even in an outdoor “cathedral.”

Something about an outdoor wedding, especially in the woods, evokes a carefree feeling. We love long, loose waves for the bride at such a wild and free ceremony. And we think that keeping decor simple with elements found in nature such as wood slices, wildflowers, and antlers brings home the woodsy spirit. An especially rustic basket would be endearing as a flower girl basket.

Embrace this trend by utilizing vintage glass bottles, galvanized metal pails and stacks of wooden crates. And of course bring in lots of greenery, and lots of unstructured florals. Wayfair has an awesome collection of nine crates on sale for less than $90, available here. You could give them an aged appearance by simply adding a touch of stain. Plus, these crates could easily transition into your home decor after the wedding.

Nothing is more woodsy than, well, actual wood. This is a rustic wedding staple, an element that we’ve seen in years past, and it will remain relevant in 2018. Wood stumps, branches and slices of tree trunks offer limitless possibilities from seating, to place settings to cake stands. Factory Direct Craft sells wood slices here.

For creative, earth-friendly woodsy favors consider handing out evergreen saplings. This gift that is a keepsake which continues to grow with your family and friends. Homespun, handmade favors in simple kraft bags embellished with paper doiles and tied with string are another good choice. Or hand out pine cone fire starters, a great DIY project.

TREND ALERT: Greenery for your Wedding #GiantWreaths #GreeneryBouquets #GreeneryBackdrop

We love the tend towards a greenery-heavy wedding look. From verdant swags, to all-green bouquets and mossy table runners, greenery is making major decor moments at weddings these days. The perfect way to add nature and style to your event, greenery is a fresh alternative to the more traditional floral look. This trend is not only naturally beautiful, but it is also extremely budget friendly. Even if you are getting married indoors with nary a window in sight, using greenery allows you to bring the outdoors in!

There are so many gorgeous types of foliage to chose from, like: lily grass, leather leaf, tree fern, galax, lavender, sage, monstera leaves, ivy, rosemary, cordyline and eucalyptus.

Blue Spruce, Cedar, Magnolia, Pine, Redwood and Juniper are other fragrant choices.

The stunning simplicity of an all green bouquet can be an unexpected and glamorous choice for brides:

Lush fern fronds can soften the look of an all green bouquet, while succulents added to the mix bring in a boho vibe. We love the wild and free feeling of the most unstructured green bouquets that look as if you simply pulled some things out of your yard. They certainly provide a, “Now, why didn’t I think of that when I got married?” moment! (Using a armload of green can certainly save you a bundle of cash, without sacrificing beauty or style!)

A few floral elements can be incorporated into a mostly green bouquet, too. This way, the flowers you chose to include, will definitely pop!

If you decide to go with a permanent bouquet option, Friend of Faux has a great DIY pictorial tutorial below, totally composed of fake stems which look gorgeously real in our opinion:

Another trend we love for ceremonies is the use of a GIANT wreath. These super-sized cuties make a breathtaking and picture-perfect backdrop. (Check out our last blog post, here, on how to make your own giant wreath using a hula hoop and dollar store items.)

Even small greenery wreaths pack a big decorating punch, especially when grouped together. You whip these up yourself in no time at all! And, we love the idea that these wedding decor items could easily find a spot in you and your fiancee’s home after the big day! Imagine how sweet and sentimental it would feel seeing one of your wedding wreaths as you enter your front door every day!

If you feel like making your own gorgeous wreath, we found an awesome, simple boxwood DIY Tutorial from myfabulesslife.com here!

Vibrant swaths of greenery, artfully draped on a frame make amazing arches to say your “i do’s” under.

A totally natural, creeping vine on a brick wall works as well for a photo backdrop for the bride and groom as does a carefully arranged trellis.

Greenery adds a delightful finishing touch to a two tiered, white wedding cake. And who can resist a generous path of green down the center of the reception tables?

We will leave you with some wise and wonderful words about the color green from Kermit the Frog:

It’s not that easy being green
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow, or gold
Or something much more colorful like that
It’s not easy being green
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things
And people tend to pass you over
‘Cause you’re not standing out
Like flashy sparkles in the water
Or stars in the sky
But green’s the color of spring
And green can be cool and friendly-like
And green can be big like a mountain
Or important like a river
Or tall like a tree
When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why
But why wonder why wonder
I am green, and it’ll do fine
It’s beautiful, and I think it’s what I want to be

TREND ALERT: Waffle Pops, a fun festival food! Perfect for Weddings #wafflepops #funfood

We are love with a new food trend we’ve been seeing popping up ALL over Instagram and Pinterest, the WAFFLE POP! This confection is a delightful combo of freshly made waffles topped, drizzled and sprinkled with all kinds of sweet shenanigans perched atop a popsicle stick or skewer. It’s portable, festive, fully customizable and perfect for a wedding reception treat. And, best of all, no sticky fingers!

Sweet Combforts (aka Home of the Waffle Pop) in Irvine, CA is credited with inventing this fabulous festival food! We just adore the fact that the co-owners both used to work at Waffle House. They SERIOUSLY upped their waffle game for sure with their riff on crispy, soft Belgian Waffles topped with sooooooo much goodness. With a debut at Coachella, Sweet Combforts has made legions of obsessed fans with these indulgent street food treats. Each and every one is dipped in cookie butter, dusted with powdered sugar and/or cocoa powder, and adorned with awesome toppings. #numnumnum

Move politely to the side Cake Pops, cuz the Waffle Pop is takin’ over! With more flat square footage of topping access, the waffle pop also affords nice indented valleys to fill with decadence. And, I’ve never seen a Cake Pop in a Crazy-Amazing Shake. #BuhByeCakePop

We like that you can fashion your waffle pops out of different shapes as well. Bitty triangles, classic circles, or even sweet, small heart-shaped waffles would work so very well at your dessert station. #Options

Heck, a quick Google search even revealed a Texas Shaped Waffle Iron.

And you can top them with literally ANYTHING from nuts, dried fruit, crushed candies, cereal, marshmallows, sprinkles to coconut shreds. While the waffles are super delish as is (mainly due to the fact that they are made with pearl sugar, which, according to Geoff Manila, the co-founder of Sweet Combforts, is like “regular sugar on steroids”), it is what SURROUNDS them that has everyone obsessed!

Here’s a look at Sweet Combforts Menu Board. What sounds good to you? A Strawberry Babe featuring Cream Cheese Frosting, Graham Crackers, Strawberries and Cream Cheese Drizzle? Perhaps you prefer to dream of cookies, specifically Oreo Cookie Butter, Oreos, and White Choco Drizzle? We will be having the Churro Crunch, consisting of Cinnamon Sugar, Cinnamon Toast Crunch plus Cream Cheese Drizzle. #OneofEachPlease

Show your family and friends a good time with a party on a stick in the form of Waffle Pops. Sweet, portable, memorable and fun…What a wonderful option for your guests on your wedding day. I can just imagine good ole’ Uncle Bob reminiscing to Aunt Laura about the reception now, “Honey, weren’t those waffle thingies on a stick good?” #Memories

TREND ALERT: Animals in Your Wedding #FurryFriends #PetsinMyWedding

Do you adore animals? If so, we suggest you jump on the trend-wagon and make plans to include them in your wedding. Fact is, if you and/or your fiancee are “animal people” it stands to reason that you would want to include them in your special day. After all pets are part of the family – so they should take part in your wedding where all your favorite people are gathered. It might be a bit more work and take a little extra planning, but including your beloved pet will take your wedding to the next level. And folks, these special wedding additions are super popular this year. So many weddings are incorporating furry friends in tons of creative ways!

Maybe you’ve been in love with horses since you were a little girl.

Conversely, could you possibly be described as a “crazy cat lady”?

Maybe his best friend is his Standard Poodle. Or you have a beloved French Bulldog. Add them to the mix on your wedding. Dogs make terrific ring-bearers and sign holders. Plus dogs are great fun ambassadors for your guests (and you!).

Are you having a rustic barn wedding? Consider surrounding yourselves with some farm-yard chickens like this lovely couple photographed by award-winning, top-rated Heather Parker Photography:

Donkeys, aplacas and llamas….oh my!

Perhaps you just want some darling, fuzzy friends for everyone to enjoy. Up the cute factor by adding floral crowns or garlands. Awwww, we don’t know which is more adorable; the baby deer, the fuzz-bun or the super-sweet dog!

Perhaps he’s always been fascinated with giraffes, or monkeys, or….. elephants!!! An elephant with the bride and groom is pretty exciting. This guy might just steal the show. And, talk about some extraordinary wedding pics!!!

If you are wondering where you can find less traditional animals, do a quick google search to find a company that services your area. Suggested searches: “rent farm animals, ” “exotic animals for your party,” “mini petting zoo rental,” etc.

TREND ALERT: Translucent Wedding Cake #NotQuiteNaked #TranslucentWeddingCakes

There is a new cake in town, and this one isn’t quite naked! This year’s updated version of the uber-popular naked cake is called the “Translucent Cake.” Translucent cakes have just a sheer hint of frosting which lets the cake layers peak through. These humble confections feature a dressed down, textured look which are usually adorned with natural elements such as flowers and/or fruit. Easily dressed up with flavorful drizzles (think Caramel or Raspberry), Translucent Cakes provide the perfect amount of sweetness: sweet but not TOO sweet. Naked, but not TOO naked.

We love the four-tiered fabulousness that is this towering translucent masterpiece. Clean and elegant, the sheer frosting and carefully placed greenery add up to a stunning display. This unfussy look would play well at any rustic/industrial, barn or even beach event. And who doesn’t love a barrel for a cake display table? Houzz has a great take on a barrel here. Resembling a wine barrel, this rustic metal accent table has a removable lid adding ample storage space so you could use at your wedding for a cake table and then bring it home for a great reminder of your special day, too.

Check out this beauty! Layers, upon six layers of delicious cake with the barest flick of frosting and an artful arrangement of fruit and flowers. This cake would be very at home at a country or backyard wedding. Heck, we think this would even be easy to make yourselves.

Translucent takes a turn for the romantic and beautiful with this four-tiered stunner. Embellished with delicate roses and the barest hint of buttercream, this confection would be a memorable treat at any wedding celebration.

For an intimate wedding, we suggest the tiniest of translucent cakes. This one is utterly gorgeous: featuring a small white cake surrounded by lavish floral elements and greenery.
Sherri Meyers, owner of The Pastry Studio in Daytona, FL is an executive pastry chef with serious cred. Her work has been featured in countless magazines and on TV networks like HGTV, The Food Network and MTV.

She offers this glorious take on a Translucent Cake at The Pastry Studio. We totally covet this Blush confection– a luxurious masterpiece of cake layers, breath-taking floral elements and greenery. Be sure to visit her site to see all of her team’s amazing cake work.

In the spirit of transparency, have you heard of the “Water Cake”? This perfectly translucent cake, aka Sakura Mizu shingen mochi is popular in Japan and is made of water, sugar and magic. This delightful morsel is so delicate that it will disappear in 30 minutes if not consumed. Probably not practical for a wedding, but super cool. Visit LittleMissBento.com to see more.

Translucent cakes will likely disappear very quickly, too, because your guests will gobble them up. And, we are clear (get it? haha) on one thing: No matter your wedding budget or style, a translucent cake will transform your cake table into a very happy place!

4 Wedding Reception Food Trends for 2017 #WeddingReceptionFoodTrends #Yum

After a beautiful marriage ceremony — following the happy tears and sentimental yearning, the oohs and ahhs over the gorgeous bride and such — we love the feeling that comes over the crowd of family and friends. The feeling that it is time to relax, head to the reception and EAT! YA-HOOOOO. Nothing livens up a crowd more than the promise of refreshments!

We’ve rounded up some of the very, very best wedding reception food trends for 2017. Granted, some of them have been around for awhile. But, you just can’t argue with tried and true good food. And while we aren’t exactly reinventing the wheel here, we do think each of these trends is a worthy choice for any upcoming wedding. Speaking of wheels, how about hiring yourself a food truck for your reception.

The darlings of hipsters, foodies and farmer’s markets, food trucks offer an amazing array of cuisines from high-end to carnival and every food in between. We love the mega-convenience factor in that these babies roll up with all the food, dishes, and staff inside. And after the party they roll all the mess on down the highway. Sort of the best way to entertain IMO. Plus they look adorable and make a great photo backdrop.

You can work a food truck into just about any wedding style. Beach wedding, how about a “Lobstah Love” seafood truck?

Mexican food is always a popular choice for post-wedding noshing: satisfying, filling and affordable.

Everybody loves some breakfast for dinner. Brinner is a great way to save on your food costs, please your guests and showcase your personality. Waffle and fruit skewers dusted with powdered sugar will spread lots of joy.

Quiche and maple bacon provide a perfect savory note.

A yummy biscuit bar provides your guests lots of options for customizing their bites.

Teensy-tiny food is soooo cute. Treat your guests to mini everything, from apps to entrees and deserts!

Min pies on sticks in jars for the win!

Mini salad shooters are beautiful to look at and easy for your guests to eat!

Curated food pairings are definitely on the rise at events this year. Since most people nowadays are exposed to chefs and chef-speak thanks to food network, they will feel special and fancy when presented with pairs. Start them off with an amuse-bouche paired with a shot of wine.

Or you can always surprise them with something more down-home like roast beef sliders and a beer.

Sure to please classics like burger sliders, grilled cheese and teensy mugs of brew are always popular. Provide cones of waffle fries for your hungry guests and they will thank you! Finish with coffee topped with donuts (the ultimate food pairing!) and you will end the event on a happy note for all.

TREND ALERT: Totchos…When Nachos Meet Tater Tots… #BestFoodMashupEver

In the bridal business we definitely believe with all our hearts that two is better than one. So we thought we’d venture into the crazy world of food mashups, whereby two foods combine into a third, hopefully better, food. For instance there is the ultimate confection from the mind of New York City Pasty Chef Dominique Ansel (who is credited with starting the food mashup craze); the CRONUT, which is a marriage of a croissants and a donut, and which we are totally down with:

There are all the crazy combos you’ve probably heard of — and kind of clutched your stomach while imagining the intense pain and pleasure eating such a concoction might induce. Like the insane ballpark fare of a Hamburger with Krispy Kreme Donuts for buns. Or a Hamburger with pizza slices instead of buns. Or the Chili Taco Dog, whereby a taco shell is stuffed with the innards of a chili cheese hot dog. Obscenely awesome. Scarily delicious. Not-for-every-day-consumption. But what a heck of a good time.

Hello Totchos!

Aka Tachos. Aka get in our belly!

All you need to do is to top crispy, crunchety oven-hot tater tots with everything you might pile on a stack of nachos. Tex Mex, Buffalo Chicken, heck throw a poached egg on top if you’re feeling Food-Networky.

Kelly Senyei, the creative genius at Just A Taste, has the perfect recipe for Loaded Totchos:

Loaded Totchos RecipeLoaded Totchos RecipeLoaded Totchos Recipe

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Add the ground beef and taco seasoning to a large sauté pan set over medium heat. Cook the beef, breaking it up with a spatula, until it is cooked throughout.

Sprinkle the ground beef atop the tater tots then top the beef with the black beans and cheddar cheese. Bake the totchos until the cheese is melted, 3 to 5 minutes.

Remove the tochos from the oven and top them with the tomatoes, onions and guacamole. Serve immediately (or else they might get soggy).

636281013629153981-Unicorn-Frappuccino.jpg

Starbucks has this to say about it’s most fabulous drink of all time:

The Unicorn Frappuccino blended crème is made with a sweet dusting of pink powder, blended into a crème Frappuccino with mango syrup and layered with a pleasantly sour blue drizzle. It is finished with vanilla whipped cream and a sprinkle of sweet pink and sour blue powder topping.

Like its mythical namesake, the Unicorn Frappuccino blended crème comes with a bit of magic, starting as a purple beverage with swirls of blue and a first taste that is sweet and fruity. But give it a stir and its color changes to pink, and the flavor evolves to tangy and tart. The more swirl, the more the beverage’s color and flavors transform.

This limited-time offering is as fleeting as a rainbow, available April 19-23, while supplies last in participating Starbucks® stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Very Best Bridal Dress Trends for Spring 2017 #BridalGownTrends

As we enter the newest Bridal Season, we like to celebrate our favorite trends. For Spring 2017, we are applauding Illusion Tops, Cascading Ballgown Skirts, Plunging Necklines, Over-sized Bows, and all sorts of adorable Bridal Gown Toppers.

Wedding toppers are those cute little extras that you can so easily slip on over your dress, be it a caplet, shawl or jacket. With the warmer season comes lots of destination weddings, folks are getting hitched at the beach, in barns, lakeside and in picturesque fields. If you are getting married in such a location, remember that sometimes a chill comes in the evening time and a topper is just the thing to complete your look and keep you comfortable.

Or, you may have a strapless dress that just needs…a little something. A jeweled caplet can evoke another era and add lots of personality to your gown. This extra glam diamond rhinestone caplet captures the feels of the stylish 1920s and is available for $125, from StaysiLeeCouture on etsy here:

Maybe you have a finely-developed fashion sense and require a pink feathered overlay to add some interest to your look:

Perhaps you want more coverage for your special day, in which case a lace jacket is the perfect addition.

Shawls are stealing the scene, as they simply go over your neck and add all sorts of beautiful interest, like this one in lace:

Whatever your situation, consider a wedding topper as the perfect finishing touch to your ensemble.

Over-sized bows are coming back to the bridal scene in a big way this season. And, the runway is quickly translating to wedding aisles, as more and more brides embrace this look.  This flirty and fun look is for the consummate girlie-girl. What is more feminine than a giant bow accent on your wedding dress: the bigger, the better? This whimsical wedding day accent is so versatile because bows can be worn in the front, back, or even on the side of your gown. And you can easily tie a bow in any color and/or fabric you like to your dress.

But sometimes a trend is a little TOO much, ne c’est pas? We do not recommend putting a huge bow on your head. Ever.

Just as the flowers bloom in springtime, the bridal runways are blossoming with softly tinted gowns in shades of gold, blush and pale blue.

Justin Alexander’s stunning pearl pink gown designed in silk is the softest tinted gown, and we just love it:Image result for Fully Beaded Sweetheart Bodice with Silk Dupion Skirt 8883

David Tutera’s gorgeous take on tinted, this strapless hand-beaded lace appliqué, organza and memory taffeta trumpet dress is in SeaMist, the palest bluish green:

Still going strong, the Illusion Bodice trend seems to be here to stay. We love the ultra-feminine coverage provided by this style as well as the ease of wear. With an illusion bodice you can have the look of a sweetheart strapless gown, but the support of gown with a top.

This fabulous dress by Sweetheart has loads of embroidered lace appliques that adorn the bodice of its’ gorgeous illusion top (also it is the palest, prettiest pink!):

The allure and sophistication of a deep plunging neckline is not lost on today’s top bridal designers. This hot trend is all over Pinterest and is a favorite of brides.

Sweetheart combines trends in this soft wedding gown which features an illusion top AND a deep v neckline. This wedding day look is loaded with beaded lace appliques and a Chantilly lace underlay. The drama (and sexiness) of the plunging neckline is tempered with an easy-to-wear illusion top. Love!

Last, but not least, we have the dramatic and mesmerizing trend of Cascading Skirts. These showstopping skirts feature tons of tiers and layers and command attention!
