DIY: Giant Fall Wreath from Dollar Store Supplies #EasyFallDecor #HulaHoopWreath #FallDisplay

September has rolled around and there is a delightful hint of crispness in the air. Fall decor is crowding the shelves at our fave stores like Target, Michael’s, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby and Dollar Tree. Starbucks has Pumpkin Spice Latte on the menu, football is on, the leaves are turning and we are already planning our fall capsule wardrobe. Needless to say, we’ve got major feels for fall right now.

Our bridal store window needs to reflect our love for this season, so we decided to make a giant fall wreath. And by giant, we mean HULA HOOP size. In fact, we made the wreath using a hula hoop!

Always budget conscious, we decided to make a wreath with major autumnal impact using ONLY Dollar store items. We invite you to make this easy, inexpensive project for your home or store window, or even for your fall wedding! We can’t imagine the cost if you tried to buy a 3 foot diameter wreath out in the world, but we’re sure it would cost a pretty penny! Our wreath costs just about $25!

The first step is a quick shopping excursion to your local Dollar store to compile your supplies. (We purchased our items at Dollar Tree.)

Fill your buggy with leaf garlands, loose leaves, tiny pumpkins, fall floral picks, bags of moss, floral wire and a hula hoop. We purchased 10 maple leaf garlands, 2 bags of Spanish Moss, 2 bags of Reindeer Moss, 1 small glitter pumpkin (we wanted more of these cuties, but they only had one), 1 mini gourd, 4 bags of leaves, a hula hoop and 4 fall floral picks.

Tools we had on hand included a glue gun, glue, fishing wire and scissors. These items can also be found at most Dollar stores as well.

Set up a project table, lay out your lovely fall items and plug in your glue gun. Start by applying glue to small sections of the hula hoop and then wrap the moss around. It makes a giant mess, so make sure you have a broom, dust pan and vacuum ready for clean up!

Keep working your way around the hula hoop, gluing on more and more moss until it is completely covered. Really squish the moss around the hoop, don’t be shy.

The moss will shed quite a bit, but keep at it, it ends up amazing. Once you have a nice base layer of moss around your hula hoop it is time to start adding your maple leaf garlands. Use floral wire to attach the garland to the wreath and wrap it around and around. Repeat the process with additional garlands.

The wreath starts looking pretty darn awesome at this point. Attach your fall embellishments to a section at the top of your wreath. We started with the pumpkin and gourd, and then filled in with lots of extra leaves and parts cut from the floral picks. Bottom right photo shows the completed top portion.

We installed our fab fall wreath in our front window. We used fishing wire to hang the wreath from the ceiling. It kept twisting and turning, so we simply added fishing wire the the bottom of the wreath and taped it to the floor. Our vision for the window was completed with more leaf garlands hung from the ceiling and scattered loose leaves.

We couldn’t resist the addition of a few adorable pumpkins purchased from Ross.

Happy Fall Ya’ll! Please comment below if you would like to see more of our DIY Decor Projects.

The project took about two hours to complete, including installation, (and clean-up) so it is pretty quick.

DIY Paper Flowers aka Decor you can make from office supplies #PlayAtWork #DIYDecor #DIYWeddingDecor

DIY Paper Flowers 1

We love to make something from nothing. And by nothing, we mean things you probably have available right now whether you are at home, school or at work. So kinda free.

Do you have a stack of copy paper, tape and scissors? Or if you don’t have any copy paper, you’ve probably got a newspaper or magazine handy. ‘Cuz you could easily substitute those for the copy paper. No tape? How about a glue stick? That’ll work too. So from those simple items you can create an amazing paper flower. Cluster a bunch of them together and you can have yourself a luxurious and gorgeous display. {Please view our previous post about how we used these for a glorious backdrop of White Paper Flowers here!}

So these flowers can be made in any color or pattern depending on the paper you use. We used white for our bridal shop window. But you could easily make whatever you like to tie into your wedding or party theme…

The following tutorial is for one style of paper flower, but you can easily make different kinds by varying the shape of petals you cut out and also varying the sizes of yours as well.

Dollar Store DIY Store Display: Pink Whimsy Window #MakeSomethingFromNothing

As much as we loved our Fourth of July Window Display….

(That garnered a national shout-out from Vows Magazine!!! Woo-hoo!)

….we knew it needed to come down on July 5th. Cuz I, for one, can’t abide past-its-due-date display. [Hello people who live in my neighborhood with Christmas decor still up in July,  I’m calling you out!]

So on July 5th, Grace and I took down every trace of red, white and blue in the store, starting with our front window.

We had no clue what the next theme would be and a budget of zilch. Undeterred, I went rooting around in our backroom where I found a stash of pale pink dollar store tablecloths.×108-inch-Pink-Plastic-Tablecover/p294274/

I remembered seeing on Pinterest a few pretty cute posts about fringing plastic tablecloths with scissors. Inspired, we got busy cutting strips into the cloths. After fringing up a few, I started installing them in horizontal rows in the window while Grace kept cutting.

The horizontal rows looked ok, but we wanted dazzling. So more rows were added in a chaotic, slapdash manner. Voila! LOVE IT!

All-in-all it took us about two hours to fringe and install. Not too bad for $16 worth of pink plastic tablecloths, some packing tape and scissors.

Grace selected the lovely David Tutera Bridal Dress by Mon Cheri Bridal, looks so so so pretty, we think, against the whimsical pink backdrop.

Dollar Store DIY: Fourth of July Window Display

We love the USA! Yay America!! Home of the brave and Land of the free!!!

In honor of our country we decided to put up a kick-bootie 4th of July Display. (For less than $20!)

4th of July Window Display

Isn’t it patriotic and pretty?

We started with rolls of red, white and blue crepe paper. Crepe paper rolls from Dollar Tree here!

I cut each color in long strips of roughly the same length… Which I was taping up to the very high ceiling at a painstaking pace of one at a time up on a very tall, precarious ladder. Then my smart sister (GG owner Jacqui) gently suggested an amazing plan. “How about I get a long strip of packing tape, and stick several of your strips on it a time?” Duh. Um, yeah, that made a whole lot of sense! Thanks Jacqui!

Things went a lot faster after that. So we did an initial background of red, white and blue crepe paper streamers on the wall. Next we hung a beautiful American Flag purchased at Walmart for less than $5. American Flag From Walmart here

Then we filled in the rest of the ceiling with varying lengths of random red white and blue. The finishing touch was adding a navy blue sash complete with another flag and some ostrich feathers to our lovely wedding dress.

The tissue paper flowers and medallions at the hemline of the gown all came from The Dollar Tree.

All of us at The Gilded Gown wish you and yours a happy and safe Fourth of July. Go USA!

A Nation’s Strength

by Ralph Waldo Emererson

What makes a nation’s pillars high
And its foundations strong?
What makes it mighty to defy
The foes that round it throng?

It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand
Go down in battle shock;
Its shafts are laid on sinking sand,
Not on abiding rock.

Is it the sword? Ask the red dust
Of empires passed away;
The blood has turned their stones to rust,
Their glory to decay.

And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown
Has seemed to nations sweet;
But God has struck its luster down
In ashes at his feet.

Not gold but only men can make
A people great and strong;
Men who for truth and honor’s sake
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly…
They build a nation’s pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

Bye Bye Prom Window, Hello Gorgeous Giant White Paper Flower Window #BridalWindowDisplay #WhitePaperFlower

As we bid adieu to Prom Season 2016 it is time to welcome this year’s exciting new Bridal Season. Yay Brides! WE LOVE YOU.

And it is time to say “Bye-Bye” to our Prom Window Display and “Hello” to something new, fresh and beautiful. (And something relatively easy and inexpensive!)

Bridal season brings to mind Springtime and Happiness. And since most of our brides are working the rustic, outdoor, DIY theme we thought a flower based window design theme would be fitting. After all, as Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said, “Earth laughs in flowers.”

Inspired by great images sourced on Pinterest, we decided to install a giant white paper flower wall for our new window display. We know this is not news to anybody, but: There are tons of great tutorials on paper flower making and tissue paper flower DIY on Pinterest! WE LOVE YOU PINTEREST!

We scavenged the materials from what we had behind the counter: One ream of copy paper, white tissue paper, three rolls of scotch tape, one roll of white duct tape, two pairs of scissors. patience and two pairs of willing hands!

We spent a few hours (six!) cutting out graduated petals in different shapes and fashioning the flower centers in varying ways. After taping them in concentric circles and adding the centers we got super inspired. We started rolling the petal edges around a pencil and loved the results. Then we realized that the flowers looked best when crumpled up, so we had a good time “distressing” our work. The flowers are basically fool-proof. Even the sad looking ones looked great when clustered together with the prettier flowers.

Installation consisted of tearing down the old display and duct taping the new flowers to the wall. Installation took about 15 minutes.

We LOVE the new window display. We will probably be making more flowers to fill it in some.

Come by and visit us at The Gilded Gown! We’d your thoughts on our new window display!
