Ms Wheelchair Tennessee 2016 Carly Pearson Found Her Dress at The Gilded Gown <3

We absolutely love meeting new people and finding out their stories. Yesterday we were thrilled to meet a beautiful, vibrant lady named Carly Pearson. She came in looking for a formal gown. She described herself as a tomboy who doesn’t like to wear dresses, but said she urgently needed a long dress. And, it needed to be beautiful. Oh, and another thing….Carly Pearson uses a wheelchair. Turns out she needed a very, very beautiful gown because she is Ms Wheelchair Tennessee 2016 and she is going to represent Tennessee in the national pageant NEXT WEEK in Grand Rapids, Michigan to compete for the crown of Ms Wheelchair America 2017. Our reactions: Wow that is cool! YAY Carly! So glad she is at The Gilded Gown! Ummm, wait. did she say Next Week??? and OK WE NEED TO HELP HER FIND THE PERFECT DRESS STAT!!!

Carly, a healthy, extremely fit and beautiful mother of two, would much rather be participating in sports than rocking a long dress on a stage. However her mission is to help other people with disabilities live active and healthy lives and she knew participating in the Ms Wheelchair Events would help promote her platform.

Carly sustained a spinal cord injury in 2002, when she fell while heroically fighting wildfires in Oregon as part of her work with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She currently works as an independent distributor for Advocare International and a motivational speaker.

Carly Pearson News Interview

Bridal Stylist Grace kept Carly busy trying on lots of gorgeous options. Everyone in the store admired the different dresses as Carly came out to look in the big mirror. The choice was obvious when Carly came out in this Nina Canacci Royal Blue Gown:

Top Ten Ways for Brides to Relax and De-Stress!

We are thrilled to have a guest for this post: The awesomely beautiful, soulful and talented Beth Young from Young Healing Massage! She took the time to share with us some of her wisdom on how brides can relieve their anxiety. And, as we all know, the process of planning a wedding can be extra-stressful. It is always important to take the time to care for yourself.

<Great news brides! Beth will be at The Gilded Gown performing chair massages on an upcoming Saturday! YAY! We will announce the date very soon.>

Beth’s Top Ten ideas on relaxing and de-stressin’:

1. Get a Massage!

Research has shown that massage can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, relieve tension, relax your muscles AND increase the production of endorphins, your body’s natural “feel good” chemical. Beth is a licensed massage therapist of 17 years with a degree in Intuitive Studies. She utilizes a combination of intuition, knowledge and heart to create a unique massage for the specific needs of each client. If you are in need of a de-stress session, please contact her at  Young Healing Massage 5113 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919 (865) 765-4373.

2. Practice breathing techniques!

Looking for an inexpensive and easy way to unwind? Breathing is free and literally right under your nose. And, as it turns out, deep breathing is not only relaxing, it’s been scientifically proven to positively affect the heart, the brain, digestion, and even the immune system.

Practicing deep breathing meditation
  • Sit comfortably with your back straight.
  • Breathe in through your nose.
  • Exhale through your mouth, pushing out as much air as you can while contracting your abdominal muscles.
  • Continue to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Feels good, doesn’t it?
  • Check out these bridal meditations from Mind Body Bride

3. Do some Yoga!

Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines physical poses, controlled breathing, and meditation or relaxation. Yoga is a big-time stress reducer, it lowers your blood pressure and your heart rate. And almost anyone can do it.

Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines that will help you achieve peacefulness of body and mind. This can help you relax — plus manage your stress and anxiety levels. Added bonus: practicing yoga on a regular basis will make you healthier, happier and therefore more beautiful.

Knoxville is lucky to have many wonderful yoga studios such as The Glowing Body  and Real Hot Yoga.

4. Exercise!

Thinking we just covered this topic with #3 yoga? We kinda did. But getting as much exercise in as you can will banish stress like nobody’s business. So take a walk in the park, ride a bike, hit the gym or get in a few laps at the pool. Any way you can get your heart rate up works. Let’s face it, exercise is the quickest way to a healthy physical glow and a stress free positive mental attitude and feeling of well-being!

5. Practice Visualizations!

If you are stressed about your wedding, try closing your eyes and imagining your day unfolding happily and beautifully. Imagine your family and friends surrounding you with love, a beautiful setting, you and your dress a vision of loveliness. See the beaming face of your beloved waiting for you at the end of the aisle. Ahhh, feel better?

Visualizing is another free technique that is perfect for reducing anxiety, and it simply involves focusing on positive mental images in order to achieve a particular goal.

 think happy. be happy.

6. Hydrate!

Water is so wonderful for you, so easy, and 100% free! Start guzzling brides, ‘cuz drinking tons of water is really a no-brainer! Proper hydration is the key to having your body function properly when you consider that your brain is 90% water and your body is about 70% water, AND the majority of your blood and every cell in your body is composed of water. H2O increases your energy and relieves fatigue. Getting your daily water also promotes weight loss and flushes out toxins. Not to mention the fact that hydrating improves complexion and boosts your immune system. Oh yeah, and it also prevents headaches!! How much water should you be drinking? Divide your weight in half and drink that amount in ounces every day to easily receive all the wonderful benefits of water! Cheers!

 7. Acupuncture!

Okay, now we are just getting crazy, right? Feeling like there is no way are you gonna VOLUNTARILY have someone stick needles into you? Is the very idea stressing you out? Well please reconsider, because clinical studies on the benefits of acupuncture show that it successfully treats conditions ranging from musculoskeletal problems (back pain, neck pain, and others) to nausea, migraine headache, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. And it doesn’t actually hurt.

8. Spend some time in an Isolation Tank!

Knoxville has something kinda crazy-cool, an Isolation Tank. Laniakea Float Tanks at 7834 Montvue Center Way in Knoxville offers one hour floats for $45.

Sensory deprivation tanks aka isolation tanks, involve spending time in a lightless, soundproof tank. The tanks are  filled with 10 inches of water, which is the same temperature as your skin and 800lbs of epsom salt. So much epsom salt allows the body to float effortlessly. The unique design of these tanks give the body multiple benefits and a feeling of zero gravity, much like floating in space!

laying-in-a-float-tankBenefits of tank time:

Reduce Blood pressure

Help Insomnia

Aid Muscle recovery

Relieve Anxiety

Improve Blood Circulation

Allow for Meditation

Help Arthritis

Cure Depression

Relieve Migraine Headache

9. Spend time with Friends!

One of the very best ways to chill is some hang-time with friends. Sharing a laugh, a coffee and a cupcake will do wonders for your stress-level. Feeling particularly anxious? Time to plan a girls night!

A recent study shows that during stressful times, being around a best friend decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

“These findings provide a better understanding as to how close relationships might serve as buffers against the adjustment difficulties that result from negative experiences,” researchers wrote in the study.

10. Music!

Listening to music can be very relaxing—and slow tempos in particular can induce a calm state of mind. (It can also slow down breathing and heart rate, lower blood pressure, and relax tense muscles too). This can be particularly beneficial when you’re getting ready for a tough day at work, or if you’re in your car stuck in traffic, or, if you’re lying in bed trying to free your mind of stressful thoughts.  So when you are feeling tense and overwhelmed listen to your jam! What is your fave feel-good song?

7 Signs You’ve Found The Perfect Wedding Dress!

Have you been shopping for your wedding dress for months? Have you dragged your bridesmaids to several cities and bridal salons? Or are you wondering how to tell when you have found your dress? Tried on so many wedding dresses that you’ve developed bridal fatigue? Indecisive by nature? Just not sure if the dress you think is the one is actually THE ONE? Well, perhaps we can help.

Here are 7 signs that you are in love with your dress and it is the perfect bridal gown for you:

1. You gasp (in a good way) when you see your reflection.
If you find yourself open-mouthed at your reflection in the mirror it is a great sign that you might have found your “Yes” Dress.

2. You (or someone in your bridal party or your bridal consultant) breaks into tears.
When the waterworks start that is a pretty sure sign you’re rocking your perfect gown.

3. All your other favorite dresses pale in comparison.
If your previous favorite styles all seem way less special and plain.

4. You can suddenly picture your fiancee’s face on your wedding day smiling lovingly at you.
Picturing your groom’s happy reaction to as you walk down the aisle? The hunt is over.

5. You won’t take the dress off.
Have you been carefully considering the dress for more than thirty minutes? Have you been excitedly repeating, “I don’t want to take it off.” You’re done.

6. You feel super beautiful.
You were worried about finding a dress you love and now you feel immense relief, because, well, you look beautiful in this dress! When you can’t get over how flattering the bodice is, or how the dropped waist hugs your curves in all the right ways. When you feel like you look better than you could have ever dreamed, congrats you’re wearing your perfect dress!

7. When you suddenly don’t need the opinions of anyone else.
Every other dress required endless querying of other people’s thoughts. This one speaks for itself, so it is a definite yes!

Dollar Store DIY: Fourth of July Window Display

We love the USA! Yay America!! Home of the brave and Land of the free!!!

In honor of our country we decided to put up a kick-bootie 4th of July Display. (For less than $20!)

4th of July Window Display

Isn’t it patriotic and pretty?

We started with rolls of red, white and blue crepe paper. Crepe paper rolls from Dollar Tree here!

I cut each color in long strips of roughly the same length… Which I was taping up to the very high ceiling at a painstaking pace of one at a time up on a very tall, precarious ladder. Then my smart sister (GG owner Jacqui) gently suggested an amazing plan. “How about I get a long strip of packing tape, and stick several of your strips on it a time?” Duh. Um, yeah, that made a whole lot of sense! Thanks Jacqui!

Things went a lot faster after that. So we did an initial background of red, white and blue crepe paper streamers on the wall. Next we hung a beautiful American Flag purchased at Walmart for less than $5. American Flag From Walmart here

Then we filled in the rest of the ceiling with varying lengths of random red white and blue. The finishing touch was adding a navy blue sash complete with another flag and some ostrich feathers to our lovely wedding dress.

The tissue paper flowers and medallions at the hemline of the gown all came from The Dollar Tree.

All of us at The Gilded Gown wish you and yours a happy and safe Fourth of July. Go USA!

A Nation’s Strength

by Ralph Waldo Emererson

What makes a nation’s pillars high
And its foundations strong?
What makes it mighty to defy
The foes that round it throng?

It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand
Go down in battle shock;
Its shafts are laid on sinking sand,
Not on abiding rock.

Is it the sword? Ask the red dust
Of empires passed away;
The blood has turned their stones to rust,
Their glory to decay.

And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown
Has seemed to nations sweet;
But God has struck its luster down
In ashes at his feet.

Not gold but only men can make
A people great and strong;
Men who for truth and honor’s sake
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly…
They build a nation’s pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

Birdcage Veils

The joyful post-war years of the 1940s saw thousands of young men returning home from the war. After spending years away, men were thrilled to be reunited with their girlfriends. Marriage rates soared. And small, stylish bridal accessories known as “birdcage veils” became popular. Birdcage Veils made from French or Russian netting have been making a comeback to the bridal world in the last few years. These timeless veils are reinterpreted in glamorous ways for the modern bride and work well with vintage-inspired weddings.

Our stylist Heather briefly discusses birdcage veils here:

Birdcage veils are a perfect choice for any fashion-forward bride looking to add some throwback charm into her wedding day. Especially flattering on short hair, and easily matched with other hair accessories such as jeweled combs or feather clips, these veils compliment many wedding styles, from Retro, Hipster, Old Hollywood, Vintage, Steampunk, Rockabilly, 1950s, English Royalty, or Celebrity.

Worn to the front, side or on the crown, the birdcage veil beautifully emphasizes a bride’s eyes. Super versatile, these veils look equally ravishing with a chic up-do, a messy bun or a pixie cut. And they are easy to wear without the weight of a traditional longer tulle veil.

A testament to their glamorous history, many celebrities such as Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, Drew Barrymore and KATE have rocked the birdcage.

If you plan on wearing a birdcage veil for your wedding day, we invite you to visit The Gilded Gown. We have a huge selection of vintage-inspired selections by Mariell and Ansonia in our huge accessories department. Located downstairs, near Sears, in Knoxville Center Mall, The Gilded Gown is open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm and Sundays from noon to 6. Come see why we are proud to be East Tennessee’s largest independent bridal retailer.

Ten Ways Your Bridal Party Can Help You Find Your Wedding Dress at The Gilded Gown

Ten Ways Your Bridal Party Can Help You

Find Your Wedding Dress at The Gilded Gown

1. Moral Support

Your Bridal Party (just by showing up at your fitting) will provide you with endless encouragement. While you are busy in the dressing room, the knowledge that your loved ones are anxiously awaiting your appearance in your next dress is so comforting.

2. Honest Opinions

Your friends and family will give you their honest opinions, the good and the not so good.

3. Helping Hands

Members of your Bridal Party are a great asset while you are at your bridal fitting. Not only can they give you their opinions about a dress you’re trying on, but they can also lend helpful hands. For instance, they can grab you a bottle of water, hand you your phone, or even help you put your hair up.

4. Photographers

Your Party make wonderful photographers. They can take pictures of your favorite gowns from every angle, front, back, side and close-ups. (And they can even text the pics to your Aunt Marge!)

5. Good Suggestions

The Bridal Party knows what you are planning for your special day, and so they can be of great assistance with ideas to tie your potential dress to your event. Planning a Glitzy Formal Affair but you’ve fallen in love with a rather plain ballgown? The Party might suggest adding a glamorous beaded sash to your dress. Voila! Glizty, blinged-out dress achieved, thanks to their advice.

6. Keeping You Grounded

It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of trying on beautiful gowns. (Sometimes brides will keep trying on increasingly expensive dresses and get completely out of their price range.) Your friends and family are terrific at reminding you of your budget.

7. Keeping You On Track

Farm wedding planned? Then perhaps your girls will gently steer you away from the 15 foot Cathedral Train Formal Gown you are infatuated with.

8. Pitching In On The Cost

Many times Bridal Party Members will lovingly contribute to the cost of the gown. We witness this time and time again and are always humbled by the kindness people show each other.

9. Building A Memory Together

“Remember how much fun we had when we found your dress?” your girls will say. Having fun, laughing and sharing a joyful experience together builds happy memories for the future. You will always remember their support and they will be delighted to have been included on your journey to find THE dress.

10. And, most importantly, Love

Hugs, happy tears, laughter, sighs, sniffs, exclamations, shared moments…an over-abundance of LOVE overflows in bridal stores. Every day we are honored to see such caring displayed time and time again. Bridesmaids hugging the bride, mothers crying with brides when they find the perfect dress, the grandmothers and aunts pulling out checkbooks to contribute, even brides who feel less than perfect finally feeling absolutely beautiful.

Your bridal party will be sure to surround you with Love!
